Other Mission Projects
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat is one of the largest homebuilders in the United States. Plymouth is a covenanted congregation with Habitat for Humanity and has been since 1990.
Emergency Service Council
Emergency Service Council provides one-time assistance for individuals and families who are residents of Lawrence and are facing a crisis. ESC is a coalition representing many social service agencies, churches, community, and civic groups. They have no paid staff. All contributions of cash go directly to ESC’s efforts to facilitate emergency financial assistance for shelter and utilities, to support its food collection program, and to coordinate other requests. Plymouth Church supports ESC financially; in addition, food collections are taken on the first Sunday of each month.
Relay for Life
The congregation organizes teams to participate in this overnight walkathon each June. The Relay for Life is the annual fund-raising event of the American Cancer Society.
The Mitten Tree
The Hazlett family, in memory of Melinda Hazlett Dunlap, donates the Mitten Tree each year. The tree stands in the Mayflower Room during Advent season, collecting mittens, gloves, hats, socks, and scarves. These items are sent on to Penn House, a clearinghouse for families in need in Lawrence.
The Willow Domestic Violence Center (Formerly known as Women’s Transitional Care Services)
The Willow Domestic Violence Center (The Willow) provides services to women, men and children survivors of domestic violence. The Willow provides a shelter house (a residence where women receive support and assistance), a 24-hour crisis line, court advocacy services, community advocacy services, and support groups. Plymouth provides The Willow with financial support and yearly collection of items needed for the shelter house. Call The Willow directly at 785-843-3333 or toll-free at 1-800-770-3030. The Willow is in need of women’s advocates (they will train) and a variety of other volunteers, as well as contributions of personal care items (including ethnic hair care products, deodorant, diapers and baby wipes) household goods and linens.
Head Start Angels
Each Christmas, Angel ornaments are available with gift ideas for the children in the Head Start Preschool. Each child receives an article of clothing and a toy from members of the congregation.
Ecumenical Christian Ministries ECM represents Plymouth and other churches on the KU campus. It provides an open and affirming place for students to explore their faith and consider their relationship to the earth and its inhabitants. Programs such as Veggie Lunch and University Forum bring the KU and Lawrence community together. As a major contributor to ECM, Plymouth also fills 3 spots on the Board of Directors. If you are interested in helping with programming or serving on the board, contact Dwight Welch, campus minister, at 843-4933 or check out the website at www.ecmku.org
Children’s Sunday School Offerings
Each year, the offerings collected during Sunday School are donated to a service project of their choice. In the past, the gift has gone to L.I.N.K., Habitat for Humanity, the Heifer Project and to local homeless shelters.
