Please join us as we observe the 8th National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
Our hearts are heavy with the recent tragic mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, and
many others. Tragedies involving guns have also happened recently right here in Lawrence.
Rage, grief, and sadness are all appropriate responses what has happened- also knowing that this incredible loss of life doesn't have to continue.
Please join our friends at Moms Demand Action as we observe the 8th National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 3 and commemorate it with the #WearOrange event, taking place on Saturday, June 4, from 9 to 10:30 am at South Park (west side). #WearOrange brings national attention to the issue of gun violence and recognizes individuals and communities impacted by it. Moms Demand Action will share its dedication and commitment to take on the fight ahead.
#WearOrange began in memory of Hadiya Pendleton, who was killed in a shooting in 2013, one week after marching in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. Her friends decided to commemorate her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. This Moms Demand Action Douglas County event will be held in South Park, and will include tying orange ribbons in the park and collecting much needed toiletries for our community partner Willow Domestic Violence Shelter. The event will be set up on the west side of Massachusetts St. near the playground with a place for donations and a Tribute Wall where you may commemorate an event or victim with writing or a photo. If you don’t have an official Wear Orange shirt, just wear anything orange!
